Yes, there will be a time after Corona. And yes, we will travel again. So here is one of our favourite photo locations: Weltenburg Abbey on the Danube River near Kelheim, Bavaria, Germany.

A Short History

While the origins of the the abbey are in the dark it is clear that Weltenburg is one of the oldest abbeys in Bavaria. It may have been mentioned in a list of abbeys as early as 817. From 932 onwards Weltenburg Abbey was part of the dioces of Regensburg.

The Location

Weltenburg Abbey is located on the Danube River close to the so-called “Danube Breaktrough”, a narrow section of the river lined by limestone cliffs (clearly visible in the featured image above).

You can easily reach Weltenburg by car. Passenger ships commute between Kelheim and Weltenburg from spring to autumn, so that a visit to the monastery can be combined with a trip through the Danube Breakthrough

The Monastery Church of St. George

From the outside St. George is not very spectacular. However, the inside is pure baroque splendor.

The Brewery

Most bavarian abbeys and monasteries had and still have a brewery. Weltenburg is no exception. And it is supposedly the oldest brewery of a monastery in the world. Whether that is true or not, the “Weltenburger Kloster Barock Dunkel”, a fairly stron dark beer, certainly is among the best dark beers in the world. Don’t miss it when you visit Weltenburg!
