Have you ever visited a place that turned out to be quite different from what you expected? It happened to me a couple of times. Among those places was the Okavango Delta in Botsuana. It really is a magical part of the world and one of the best places to watch and, of course, photograph wildlife.

Our idea of the Okavango Delta

We didn’t have any particular ideas apart from the basic knowledge, that there is an abundance of wildlife. Of course we had looked at maps. But maps are not the real world and can be quite deceiving. We knew that the water of the Okavango River spreads over the delta and attracts lots of animals during the dry season in Botsuana. That was the reason why we wanted to go there in the first place. And we were not dissapointed.

However, we were not prepared for the beauty of the landscape and the environment. We had, subconciously, expected swampy, brackish water. After all what can you expect when you spill lots of water over soil and sand?

We couldn’t have been more wrong. The water was clear and clean. According to the natives you could even drink it. It was just amazing.

From the air the Okavango Delta also offers great views. And you can hardly miss these views because many places in the delta can only by reached by plane.

The Okavango Delta is definitely one of those places you should visit if you have the chance.
